2024. urtearen amaieran, ATRAE 2024<\/a> deialdiaren ebazpena argitaratu zen, Espainiako sisteman ikerketa-talentu finkatua txertatzeko programa. Deialdi horretan, CSIC-INTAko Astrobiologia Zentroan (CAB) Milgatz proiektua hasteko beka bat eman zidaten.<\/p>\n

Milgatzek Mexikon dagoen Alfonso Serrano Teleskopio Milimetriko Handian (GTM\/LMT<\/a>)\u00a0 dagoen TolTEC kamara <\/a><\/span>erabiliz, milimetroko uhin-luzeretan urruneko galaxien azterketa panoramikoak egitea du helburu. TolTEC kamerak bi azterketa onartu ditu dagoeneko zeruaren 60 gradu karratu mapatzeko, eta horrek hautsez betetako ehunka izar sortzen diren galaxiak eskainiko dizkigu.<\/p>\n

Milgatz akronimoa da, eta osatuta dago honako erreferentziekin: neurketen milimetro-uhin-luzera (mil), gaztelaniaz 1000 edo euskaraz mila bada ere, galaxiak (ga), t-rako TolTEC eta z<\/em>-rako gorriranzko lerrakuntza, astrofisikan unibertsalki erabiltzen den laburdura teknikoa. “Gatz”-ek gatza esan nahi du euskaraz, noski, baina baita bizitasuna, zorroztasuna eta umorea ere, gaztelaniaz ohikoa den konnotazioa ere bai. TolTECen erroldek milaka galaxia agerian utziko ditu.<\/p>\n

Proiektuaren logotipoa behatzaileari galaxiak zerbitzatzen dizkion gatzontzi hau da. Nire laguna den “Jaio Espioia”,<\/a> Bilbo eta inguruko kultur aktibista bikaina, da logotipoaren sortzailea.<\/p>\n

The Department of Astrophysics at the Center for Astrobiology (CAB<\/a><\/u><\/span>; CSIC\u2013INTA, Spain) invites applications for a postdoctoral research assistant position in the field of Galaxy Formation and Evolution<\/strong>. The successful candidate will work on the Milgatz project<\/a><\/u><\/span> (ATR2024-154316), led by Dr. Itziar Aretxaga, entitled:<\/p>\n

\u201cMillimeter-Wavelength Large-Area Surveys of Galaxies with TolTEC at High Redshift (Milgatz)\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The selected candidate will join the CAB campus in Villafranca del Castillo, located at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC<\/a><\/u><\/span>), near Madrid. The position is expected to start between June and September 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

CAB is a multidisciplinary research institute jointly funded by the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Spanish National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA). It operates across two campuses: ESAC (Villafranca del Castillo) and INTA (Torrej\u00f3n de Ardoz). The successful candidate is expected to interact with researchers at both campuses and with the international TolTEC science team.<\/p>\n

As a member of the Spanish research community, the successful candidate will have access to major observational facilities, including ESO facilities (VLT, ALMA)<\/strong>, IRAM\/NOEMA<\/strong>, and observatories at La Palma<\/strong>, such as the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and ING<\/strong>, with access to the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Project Description<\/h3>\n

Milgatz exploits millimeter-wavelength surveys conducted with the <\/u>TolTEC camera<\/b><\/u><\/span><\/a> at 1.1, 1.4, and 2.0 mm<\/strong> on the Large Millimeter Telescope Alfonso Serrano (LMT)<\/strong>. The project aims to characterize the dusty star-forming galaxy population and quantify its contribution to the star formation history and chemical enrichment of the Universe. The successful candidate will be part of the TolTEC-associated science team, with direct access to TolTEC Legacy Survey data<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Requirements<\/h3>\n

Applicants should:<\/p>\n

    Hold a PhD in Astronomy or Astrophysics<\/strong> by June 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Have experience in observational extragalactic research<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Demonstrate a strong publication record<\/strong> in peer-reviewed astronomy journals<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Possess high-performance computing skills<\/strong> and\/or millimeter-wavelength observational experience<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Experience with extragalactic surveys<\/strong> at optical, infrared, millimeter, and\/or radio wavelengths will be particularly valued. Teaching experience, student supervision, outreach activities, and knowledge of Spanish are considered assets but are not required<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Research Group<\/h3>\n

    Dr. Itziar Aretxaga is the project scientist of TolTEC<\/strong> and joined CAB in 2025 with the Milgatz project. The TolTEC scientific collaboration comprises more than 70 scientists across 8 countries<\/strong>. The selected candidate will join the TolTEC scientific associates team and interact closely with this international consortium, as well as with the Galaxy Formation and Evolution<\/strong> research group at CAB (Villafranca del Castillo and Torrej\u00f3n de Ardoz).<\/p>\n
